Explosions of July, a message from our Commodore
In September 2009 the New York Yacht Club conducted the inaugural NYYC Invitational Cup where 19 amateur yacht club teams from 14 nations competed in chartered NYYC Swan 42s in Newport, RI. Competitors had to be amateurs members in good standing of their yacht club and nationals of the country represented. I have mentioned in these pages before that we have been invited and have accepted the NYYC invitation for the 2010 challenge. This year’s continuation of the NYYC IC event will be run as a fleet racing regatta sailed in Sonar and J/22 ‘type’ yachts. The goal for this year is to run a regatta with “premier U.S. yacht clubs” to select three teams who will be invited to participate in the 2011 event in Swan 42 Class yachts. The actual dates for the upcoming event are September 7-11, 2010. As it stands right now skipper Bryan Dyer has asked his wife, Vicki Dyer, his brother, Jason Dyer, and Jim Mitchell to round out the crew. After watching the promotional DVD and some of the online videos from the past event I can tell you I am way over-the-top excited about our prospects for success. This is just the kind of event where the Boat Club loves to show up and clean up. It’s been done before and liability is great it will happen here.
The preparation for this event is slightly less than monstrous but certainly manageable and not too dissimilar for any other high level travel-to type regatta. Deadline for acceptance was February 15, official entry form with entry fee was due May 1, deadline for media contacts and .jpeg (electronic picture) of the burgee was June 18, so far so good. Deadline for crew list and eligibility forms is August 15, and they are in process. Looking ahead there are travel considerations, accomodations, and on site transportation for the crew and support personnel. Now, support personnel in this context means, how should I say this – you! Newport, Rhode Island is a great destination spot. That we haveĀ an interest in being there makes it all the greater. I can think of no better reason than to journey forth in support of our Fort Worth Boat Club Invitational Cup Challengers! If there is even a hint of a possibility you would like to come along please get in touch with me. I know of at least one member who plans to have his boat at a bird’s eye view of the start. I promise that much for anyone who decides to come along. How can you go wrong, at least you will know your way around town for the next year! Wishing you and yours a Happy 4th of July!!
