Week in Review
I have three words for you about the Hub Isaacks Memorial Junior Sailing Fund:
WOW, WOW, WOW!!!
Not more than two weeks before the auction was to be held there was some worry on the faces of Committee Chair Kim Chaumont and her team. However, they dug in there heals and kept asking for help – and wow, help they got. The Ball room was packed with donations for the silent auction and over 20 items for the live auction. The FWBC staff hustled with free drinks and food (6-8) and the members were most generous with their bids. The Juniors got involved helping clean up boats for the auction, helping the band set up, selling ties, cozies, and raffle tickets. The Juniors also got a head start signing up pledges for the Dinghy Distant Sail-A-thon – to be held September 25. They raised nearly $3000 in just an hour or so walking the crowds. Some of the top sales people were Elizabeth Walker, Remi O’Kelley, and Grace Embry. Besides being generous our members were also working behind the scenes as our power went out and Commodores’ Latimore and Schutts (Vice) crawled in the attic to find a dead squirrel had eaten into a wire. It got a little warm in the Ball Room but thanks to everyone’s efforts the show continued. At the end of the night the total amount raised appears to be about $48,000.00. Wow!!! If you were not there you really missed just how great this club is. More next time on where does the money go?
Coming Up:
The next regatta for all boats is Chocopalooza at Rush Creek Yacht Club in Dallas – September 17-18. Our team as I know it is:
Austin, Andrew, Caleb, Christophe – all on Optis and Alex & Will 420. If the beginners would like to compete – I would suggest a practice. I can only make it on Monday morning 9am. I will not have practice unless several people sign up for practice. If you want Opti practice Monday at 9am – email me.
We will load up on Friday, Sept 10. We will need an Opti trailer driver and a coach boat trailer driver. Schwinn’s have the 420.
Dinghy Distance Classic – Sail-a-thon – Sept 25th. This event will likely start at 9am on Saturday and sail relay style in Open Bics, Optis, and 420s. The course will be a reaching course 1 mile long. Our goal is to sail each boat 21 miles (age of the Hub Isaacks Fund). Kids will get pledges per mile from neighbors, grand parents, friends, and even at the auction! Lisa Schwinn is mailing letters and pledge forms directly to the Juniors. Call us if you have not see these in the next week.
Sea Scout Ship (809) – Solarus – At the land meeting, August 31, the Ship worked on their Boater Safety lessons and took a pretest. They should be certified and boat legal in the next couple weeks.
See ya on the water.
